When Kentucky US Senate candidate Rand Paul said that if elected he would seek to join forces with Tea Party-minded senators like Jim DeMint (SC), and possibly current senate candidates like Mike Lee of Utah and Sharron Angle of Nevada, former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R-MS) told the Washington Post, “We don’t need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples.”

Warning of any such possible bloc of rogue Republican senators, Lott added “As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them.”

You have to give Lott credit for his honesty.

The long established process of becoming a respected Republican on Capitol Hill is for politicians to mouth conservative rhetoric in order to get elected, and then to advance their careers by supporting every bit of big government legislation favored by their party.

If some honest conservative dared to criticize such behavior, talk radio and the right-wing media would always have that Republican’s back, pointing out that the Democrats were always worse, helping to insure that politician’s re-election.

This scenario describes Lott’s entire career and it should be no surprise that he now works as a Capitol Hill lobbyist.

Lott’s common brand of Republicanism, always masquerading as “conservatism,” reached new heights during the George W. Bush years and survives today as the rump of the Republican Party—members of which still offer no apologies for their past behavior.

When Tea Partiers now go after Republicans like Senator Bob Bennett, or give Senator Lindsey Graham holy hell at a town hall, mainstream pundits like to call the movement too “extreme” while scratching their heads and asking, “but aren’t these ‘conservative Republicans ?”

Answer: No.

They never were, and this is a truth grassroots conservatives finally seem to be waking up to.

When Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) announced she was forming a Tea Party Caucus in the House this week, Rep.Mike Pence (R-IN) was asked if he was a member, and replied with his best Sarah Palin impression, “you betcha!” But what kind of conservative, exactly, is Pence? What kind of conservatives are Rep. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) or Rep. John Cornyn (R-TX), just to name three names already associated, either implicitly or explicitly, with the Tea Party Caucus? Libertarian guru Lew Rockwell makes a good point, “Thanks to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews tonight, I was able to see the predators John Cornyn, Jeff Sessions, and Mike Pence refuse to say what they would cut from the federal budget.

They blabbed, but refused to name one program to diminish.

That is because the Republicans are as bad as the Democrats—they want a massive state to control and loot for them, too.

They no more believe in smaller government than the non-NASA man in the moon.

In power, the Republicans have always been terrible.”

And indeed they have.

Is Bachmann’s Tea Party Caucus a genuine manifestation of that movement’s power and influence, something that could possibly—and finally—bear conservative fruit? Or is it an attempt to do what Lott said must be done to any honest conservative who dares step foot on Capitol Hill, or as he put it “we need to co-opt them.”

On one hand, Bachmann’s group forces Republicans who like to talk a good Tea Party game to explicitly endorse the movement, which could prove a testament to their conservative seriousness.
On the other hand, men like Pence, Sessions and Cornyn could simply be just like Trent Lott—eager to court voters using the right-wing language of their day, in this case the Tea Party—but not so eager to carry out any actual conservative agenda.

As late as 1996, a moderate GOP presidential candidate like Bob Dole openly called for the abolishment of the Department of Education at every campaign stop, something that was also a part of the official Republican platform.

Today, supposedly conservative Republicans like Pence, Sessions and Cornyn cannot even come up with a single thing they would cut out of the federal budget while appearing on a liberal talk show, and a budget much larger than it was in 1996, at that.

Is Chris Matthews that intimidating? Or are such “conservatives” not that serious?

It is worth noting that although candidate Rand Paul, a serious conservative by any measure, came up with the idea of a Tea Party Caucus in the Senate, his father, Congressman Ron Paul—the most serious conservative on Capitol Hill—has yet to join Bachmann’s group.

The effectiveness of the Tea Party is due in large part to the fact that it is not a creation of Washington, but to the extent that it is successful it might have to make inroads into the belly of the beast, whether by simply holding politicians’ feet to the fire, or even some politician’s going the full route of beginning to speak in its name.

Time will tell, and Bachmann’s caucus could very well be a healthy and necessary reflection of the movement’s success—or it could be the Republican Party successfully co-opting another conservative movement.

Conservatives should always welcome any new productive possibilities or useful allies.

They should also remain vigilant.

Black Conservatives take Lead Role in Tea Party Movement

Though the tea party movement has attracted criticism for its supposed lack of diversity, minority activists who are involved say the movement has little to do with race, and that it is attracting a more diverse crowd every day.

Lloyd Marcus’ conservatism started when he was 9.

His family had just moved out of the “ghetto” to a brand-new high rise in Baltimore — within months, he said, the “dream come true” turned into a nightmare, as the building of welfare-collecting black residents became a den of crime.

His father moved the family out as soon as he got a job with the city fire department, but “my cousins never escaped,” Marcus said.

He cried as he told the story.

Marcus, a black conservative who is now involved in the growing tea party movement, attributes the problems of his childhood neighborhood, his extended family and the black community in general to a “cradle-to-grave government dependency” that in the case of his cousins enabled an idle life of crime and drug abuse.

To Marcus, President Obama’s policies perpetuate that dependency.

That’s why, he says, it baffles him and other black conservatives when the tea party movement is dismissed as somehow anti-black, as a rowdy bunch of ignorant, white protesters who have it in for the nation’s first black president.

“This is the nicest angry mob I’ve ever seen,” Marcus said.

Marcus is one of a number of black conservatives who have joined up with, and helped lead, the conservative tea party movement since its inception.

Though the movement has attracted criticism for its supposed lack of diversity — MSNBC host Chris Matthews recently called the groups “monochromatic” and “all white” — those minority activists who are involved say the movement has little to do with race, and that it is attracting a more diverse crowd every day.

“I think a lot of black people are waking up from their Obama night-of-the-living-dead fog,” Marcus said.

“They were walking around like zombies going Obama, Obama, Obama.”

He and other black conservatives connected with one of the hundreds of tea party groups across America were largely active in conservative and Republican causes before the movement’s start in early 2009.

They spoke and wrote about the need for smaller government, lower spending and lower taxes and warned that Obama’s candidacy would pose a threat to those values.

But in the tea party movement they found a group that not only reflected their views but provided a platform.

Marcus campaigned with a group against Obama in the 2008 election.

But the Florida resident, who is a musician, gained a degree of fame in the tea party world a year ago when he cut a “tea party anthem” song — in it, he belted about the dangers of wealth redistribution to a gospel-sounding backup track.

“In less than a week, the song was national,” Marcus said.

He was asked to sing at an Orlando tea party rally last spring and has since performed at rallies across the country.

He’s traveled cross-country on both Tea Party Express tours and plans to join up for the third tour this March.

Marcus does not advocate for the creation of a third party, but said the tea party groups should serve to pull the Republican Party back to the conservative roots from which it has strayed.

William Owens, a black author and publisher who with his wife traveled on the Tea Party Express tours with Marcus and has spoken at just about every stop along the way, also came out strongly against Obama in 2008.

He published the book, Obama: Why Black America Should Have Doubts, before the election, in an attempt to address what he called a “misguided passion” toward the former Illinois senator in black America.

When the tea party movement started, he said he found a way to build on what he was already doing, outside the Republican Party system which he calls out of touch.

He first spoke at a rally in Las Vegas on tax day last April.

“It was just a natural fit,” Owens said.

He said the rallies are still “mostly white,” but that more blacks are getting involved.

He took particular umbrage at Matthews’ comment, blasting out a press release that criticized the MSNBC host for “pushing conservative black Americans to the back of the media bus.”

Owens now publishes a journal documenting the tea party cross-country tours.

The Multi-Cultural Conservative Coalition is also sponsoring the next leg of the Tea Party Express.

Despite the enthusiastic involvement of black conservatives in the tea party rallies and trips, Obama still enjoys seemingly unshakable support from the majority of black Americans.

A recent poll from Gallup put Obama’s approval rating among blacks at 91 percent.

Among whites, that number was 42 percent.

Tea party groups also might not be doing themselves any favors when some of their supporters are photographed holding somewhat shocking signs at rallies — such as one last year that said, “The White House has a lyin’ African.“

But such demonstrators may be the exception.

Charles Lollar, a Maryland-based tea party supporter who is black, said there’s no validity to the racism charges.

“I’ve seen black faces in the crowd. I’ve seen Latino faces in the crowd. … It’s not a movement of color. It’s not a movement of party. It’s a movement of principle. It’s a movement of America,” Lollar said.

Lollar started speaking at tea party events last winter and said his biggest motivation is opposition to the stimulus package — both the $787 billion package that passed last February and the sequel that some Democrats are trying to push this year.

Lollar has since parlayed his activism into a high-stakes campaign.

The Charles County businessman is hoping win the GOP nomination to challenge House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., in the congressional midterm this November.

“When we beat him in November, it’s going to send a strong message across the country,” he said.

Lollar, whose previous post was as chairman of the Charles County Republican Central Committee, has an uphill battle to unseat the nation’s second most powerful House Democrat.

Hoyer has been in office nearly three decades, and his latest campaign finance report put his available cash at $1.3 million.

Lollar said he’s raised $40,000 — he aims to raise $2.5 million by fall.

Lollar is running from within the GOP apparatus.

But it remains to be seen whether the party establishment will reach out to other tea party conservatives like him to ensure they stay loyal to the Republican Party and not challenge it like Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman did in New York state.

Hoffman, who is white, pushed out the Republican candidate in the race for Congressional District 23, and ended up losing narrowly to Democrat Bill Owens.

David Avella, executive director of Republican recruiter GOPAC, said his organization hasn’t been actively mining the tea party movement for state and local candidates but that the groups could prove fertile ground for candidates.

“Many in the tea party movement are Republicans who want to make sure the party gets back to its fiscal discipline days,” he said, calling those activists natural “allies.”

Tea partiers point to recent political coups they say demonstrate the movement’s broadening influence and appeal.

And they say they feel a certain freedom in the scattered leadership of the movement, as opposed to the top-down style of the GOP.

“I think it’s great that we have all these different organizations and they have nobody in charge,” Marcus said.

“This is a movement that has swept the country,” Marcus said.

“It has really been the rebirth of conservatism in America.”

Interestingly, Marcus said he used to work with one of Obama’s biggest supporters, Oprah Winfrey, decades ago at a local station in Baltimore before she moved to Chicago.

The two have since lost touch, he said.

The Tea Party Isn’t Racist

At this week’s NAACP annual meeting, members voted to censure the Tea Party as “racist.” But it’s the NAACP that’s the throwback, argues Tunku Varadarajan.

NAACP: Can we all agree that it stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Cynical Politics?

The proper expansion of “NAACP” has a profoundly archaic ring to it.

I know, I know: The retention of that primordial name—the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People—has to do with safeguarding history; and an irrefutably impressive history it is, too.

But can anyone deny that the “colored” part of the organization’s name is no longer preservative of anything that is at all meaningful?

Colored: Who the heck says that in the America of today, unless you’re a very, very old friend of the late highwayman (as in dedicated asphalt, not armed robbery) Robert C. Byrd? Which is why no member of this once-courageous black organization will spell out its full name.

Everyone says, instead, “N-double A-CP”: To elongate the abbreviation is to expose oneself to derisive—or, worse, baffled—inquisition. (“Dad, Mom, what’s with the ‘colored’ thing?”)

The NAACP, this vestigial bone on the American body politic, has thrust itself into the headlines by voting, at its annual meeting Tuesday, to censure as “racist” the Tea Party movement.

This controversial public rebuke—delivered a day after the first lady, Michelle Obama, addressed the NAACP’s conference—has opened up a raw, new racial front in the run-up to the November elections.

In effect, the self-congratulatory, post-racial Obama camp is reaching for the crudest weapon in the Democratic arsenal: the racial blunderbuss.

Of course, desperate times call for desperate measures, and the NAACP is going back to an old playbook.

The NAACP is resorting to the Jacksonian (Jesse, not Andrew) ploy to use the race card (a) to rally blacks to the mid-terms; and (b) to intimidate the mainstream media, so that it doesn’t report critically on a liberal administration, urging it instead to focus on the perceived sins of the Tea Party movement.

If black Americans are suffering due to our current economic woes, Obama’s own policies are hardly helping them.

The NAACP can’t bitch about “the Man” anymore because the Man is Obama.

And so instead it turns its racially monolithic vituperation on the Tea Party, which has never been in power, and has had no impact on the economic condition of black Americans—except to advocate policies (smaller government, lower taxes, radically reduced deficits, etc.) that would likely improve the standard of living of all Americans (blacks included).

In fact, the Tea Party is a greater friend of black Americans, one might say, than the administration, and is much more representative of America than the NAACP. (There are many more black members of the Tea Party—however you define that movement—than there are, by definition, non-black members of the NAACP.)

The NAACP senses—knows—that the electoral momentum is building inexorably against President Obama.

And they hope to slow it by playing the race card.

Let there be no doubt that nothing would have been tabled at this NAACP meeting without President Obama’s imprimatur—especially with the first lady as the keynote speaker.

Our first black president—with his lowest approval ratings ever—is using his race politically, through a surrogate.

But shameless as all this is, it may have some effect.

As Shelby Steele, a political scientist at the Hoover Institution, told me, “racist stigma in America is so powerful that truth and reason look meager next to it.

Any populist movement—such as the Tea Party—that is predominantly white, has this vulnerability of seeming to be a throwback to the nation’s racist past.”

Michelle Obama’s participation as keynote speaker could prove toxic to the Democrats in the run-up to the November elections—even though she confined her remarks to obesity and the like, and steered clear of references to the Tea Party.

Many in America already believe that she is a black militant in mufti, and her headlining of a gathering which cast the Tea Party as racist will have been noted by a good many ordinary, non-radical, middle-of-the-road Americans—not to mention Tea Party activists, who will be sure (and who can blame them?) to put together little YouTube packages from the NAACP shindig, cutting from Michelle O to Ben Jealous, the NAACP president who was the resolution’s prime mover.

So here we have the Tea Party, one of the nation’s most organic, Athenian, democratic movements, being attacked by a political organization—the NAACP—that is among the most sclerotic, dinosaurian, and cadaverous of America’s political groupings.

When race is in play, there is vulnerability all around.

The NAACP, and President Obama, will learn that in the months ahead.

Tutti più o meno strattonano il termine “libertà” nel tentativo di farlo proprio, indipendentemente da ciò che poi politicamente o socialmente si professa.

Non voglio giudicare associazioni, comitati di cittadini, partiti che da Destra a Sinistra e via dicendo abusano di questo termine, ma quanti di questi fanno una vera lotta per la tua libertà? Nessuno.
O meglio: tutti, a loro dire, perchè oggi in Italia c’è un’idea di libertà completamente distorta, completamente rielaborata ad hoc per situazioni limite, tralasciando invece il vivere quotidiano.
Prima delle canne libere, della prostituzione o dei matrimoni omosessuali, che attengono ad una sfera etica e non Universale, ci sono forse bisogni primari imbrigliati da un sistema che ci porta ad essere meno liberi di una condizione umana primordiale.
Libertà fondamentalmente significa non avere padroni e potersi autodeterminare.
Le tre libertà fondamentali sono economiche (uno schiavo dipende per la maggior parte delle sue entrate dal padrone), fisiche (un servo ha ben chiaro cosa può e non può fare), di pensiero (un suddito non ha possibilità di scelta).
Cosa ha garantito nel corso del tempo la sopportazione di qualsiasi forma di schiavitù? Il fatto che essa venisse esercitata per il bene del servo: si sa che la via dell’inferno è lastricata di buone intenzioni.

Inoltre prebende di vario genere hanno continuamente indorato la pillola.
Anche se non hai un anello al naso e non ricevi frustate, sei sicuro di essere finalmente libero?
Economicamente non lo sei.

Lo Stato decide per te, prelevando tra la metà e i due terzi di quello che guadagni “per il tuo bene”. Poi la maggior parte della spesa del tuo bene finisce in sprechi, rendite, stipendi, privilegi: finisce insomma nel “bene di altri”, posti ad amministrare il tuo bene.
Siamo sicuri che tu non sia in grado di decidere, a parità di spesa, cosa sia meglio, eliminando tutta una serie di sovrastrutture?
Era più schiavitù, quando in cambio di piaceri e tutele padronali, il sovrano ti tratteneva parte del raccolto?
Fisicamente è dove abbiamo fatto più progressi (al di là comunque di alcune limitazioni palesi o più subdole); nessuno ti può vendere direttamente, anche se rimane un concetto che questa società del bene comune non tutela molto: la sicurezza.

Quando tu per paura non giri per strada, non puoi uscire di casa da solo/a o hai forti limitazioni dovute ad uno stato di insicurezza diffusa e a fronte di questo non hai nemmeno il diritto di difenderti, non sei una persona libera.
La libertà di pensiero è l’altro nodo cruciale.

La democrazia ha cambiato il punto di vista, perchè di fatto oggi sei tu che scegli chi ti governa e quindi pensi di avere in mano il telecomando.
Concentrati però su quanto ti è dato sapere, sulle vere alternative che ti si presentano, sul fatto che quasi mai puoi scrivere il “menù”, analogamente a quanto succede sul versante economico.
Gran parte dei media oggi è controllato dallo Stato o da gruppi che bene o male sono collegati a forze di governo o opposizione.

In Italia abbiamo un’informazione ad uso e consumo del sistema politico.
Informazione che non mette assolutamente in discussione il sistema in sé mostrando alternative, ma semmai cerca di screditare o accreditare un partito rispetto all’altro al fine del controllo del tutto.
Da nessuna parte ti viene detto che si può avere uno Stato leggero, che esistono sistemi in cui c’è la libertà di scelta, che esiste un’alternativa a tutto questo.

La realtà è filtrata e quello che ti diciamo bollato come fantasia.

Come nel film Matrix, noi oggi siamo a proporti la pillola azzurra (liberarti dalle verità preconcette) o la pillola rossa (continuare a cullarti nei dogmi della modernità).
L’esempio dei tea party americani o il rifiuto dell’eccesso di tassazione non sono altro che macroscopiche spie che possono svegliarti dal torpore, portarti ad una scelta.
Gli strumenti per liberarti da questo Grande Fratello oggi ci sono.

Forse alcuni sono gli stessi strumenti che sono stati utilizzati e condizionati per asservirci senza farci pensare di esserlo.

Ma attraverso l’uso di internet, della possibilità di aggregarci intorno ad una sola bandiera o ad uno o tanti gruppi diversificati, noi oggi sfruttiamo i bug del sistema per rovesciarlo.

Ecco cosa in Italia sono i Tea party.

Non solo una lista di richieste politiche, ma un vero e proprio movimento di liberazione.
Non è una battaglia per un partito o un altro.

E’ una battaglia per togliere poteri allo Stato che sono del tutto superflui.

Per liberare quanto di buoni oggi c’è e viene imbrigliato nel nome del bene collettivo: le individualità.
Noi ti rimettiamo protagonista, perchè pensiamo che tu sia in grado di scegliere il bene per te e per chi ti sta intorno, meglio di chiunque altro.
Anzi pensiamo che delegare la propria felicità e il proprio bene a terzi sia la rinuncia più grave che un uomo possa fare, la sottrazione del libero arbitrio di cui ci è stato fatto dono.

Ci sono dogmi inconfutabili e molto poco divini.

Ti insegnano come rosari che la nostra sia la migliore sanità del mondo e come questo giustifichi tutto, che l’istruzione deve essere di massa e la scuola di Stato, che la TV pubblica è un servizio utile, che le tasse “sono una cosa bellissima“, che le pensioni non le puoi scegliere, che alla tua sicurezza ci pensa lo Stato.
Chiariamoci.

Noi non vogliamo togliere la possibilità di pensarle e di portare avanti queste visioni.
Ci sembra però del tutto anomalo che queste siano assunte a Verità assolute, incontrovertibili e fondative di tutto.

Che addirittura ci sia una repressione molto forte per garantirle.

Che qualsiasi alternativa sia bollata come male.

Almeno confrontiamoci.

Quando si passa alle categorie dell’assoluto, del bene o del male, siamo su un altro piano, si chiede un atto di Fede ed io personalmente atti di fede non ne faccio.

Dimenticatevi quindi servi della gleba, iloti, plebei, coltivatori di cotone: sicuramente oggi la tua persona fisica non appartiene più al patrimonio personale di alcun individuo, non sei commerciabile.

Dall’800 in poi l’uomo si è applicato nell’inventare forme di schiavitù e di rendita più avanzate sotto la cappa “protettiva” dello Stato.

Ti fanno pensare che tutto questo sia sempre esistito ma non è così e forse non è casuale che tutto ciò è funzionato solo in presenza di regimi autoritari.

Riflettici.

Laddove si affermavano strati sociali differenti, venivano meno i diritti di proprietà ma se ne introduceva di nuovi e più subdoli, attraverso l’invenzione di uno Stato invasivo.

La battaglia per uno stato leggero è oggi in Italia una rivoluzione, una battaglia di libertà che coinvolge ognuno di voi.

Noi siamo la pillola azzurra.

Ron Paul: Current Afghanistan Policy is Unsustainable

Report: Tab for ‘War on terrorism’ tops $1 trillion

The United States has spent more than $1 trillion on wars since the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, a recently released Congressional report says.

Adjusting for inflation, the outlays for conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the world make the “war on terrorism” second only to World War II.

The report Cost of Major U.S. Wars by the Congressional Research Service attempts to compare war costs over a more than 230-year period — from the American Revolution to the current day — noting the difficulties associated with such a task.

Since the the 9/11 terror attacks, the United States has spent an estimated $1.15 trillion.
World War II cost $4.1 trillion when converted to current dollars, although the tab in the 1940s was $296 billion.

World War II consumed a massive 36 percent of America’s gross domestic product — a broad measurement of the country’s economic output.

The post-9/11 cost of the conflicts is about 1 percent of GDP.

Comparisons of costs of wars over a 230-year period, however, are inherently problematic, the report says.

“One problem is how to separate costs of military operations from costs of forces in peacetime.
In recent years, the DOD (Department of Defense) has tried to identify the additional ‘incremental’ expenses of engaging in military operations, over and above the costs of maintaining standing military forces.“

“Figures are problematic, as well, because of difficulties in comparing prices from one vastly different era to another,” according to the report.

“Perhaps a more significant problem is that wars appear more expensive over time as the sophistication and cost of technology advances, both for military and for civilian activities.”

The costs associated with the “war on terrorism” could still go much higher.

A Congressional Budget Office estimate from 2007 said the cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq could total $2.4 trillion by 2017, more than double the current amount.

It’s Obama’s War, All Right

Afghan insurgent attacks killed six U.S. soldiers Saturday, bringing the total to 1,171 — and counting.

Eight years after achieving our initial war aims, disrupting al Qaeda and punishing its Taliban protectors, we have 94,000 troops in-theater, chasing “50 to 100” Al Qaeda operatives, “maybe less,” says President Obama’s CIA director.

Good news, though: Construction of Kabul’s 900,000-square-foot Police Training Center is “progressing according to plan.”

After $27 billion spent, Afghan police are still “illiterate, corrupt, and trigger-happy,” their instructors lament, but a spiffy new training complex can’t hurt.

Enough. With American casualties mounting, it’s clearer than ever that “Operation Enduring Freedom” has become a sickening waste of blood and treasure.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele caught grief recently for suggesting the war was doomed to fail.

Steele, who has offended everyone from pro-lifers to Rush Limbaugh fans, truly has the gift of gaffe.

But he wasn’t wrong to call Afghanistan a “war of Obama’s choosing.”

A recent National Journal graphic shows that under the president’s Afghan “surge,” OEF deployments passed Iraq troop levels in “a strategic pivot point” earlier this year.

Obama, Steele suggested, had bought into the Democratic “script” that has prevailed since the 2004 Kerry campaign: Iraq’s a distraction — “the battle should really be in Afghanistan.”

Obama’s escalation of that battle raises young John Kerry’s question about Vietnam: How do you ask someone “to be the last man to die for a mistake?“

Restrepo, an award-winning documentary featured last month at “Silverdocs,” captures the Afghan war’s tragic mix of heroism and futility.

Director Sebastian Junger spent a year in the hostile Korengal Valley, embedded with an Army platoon whose soldiers, with night-vision goggles clipped to their Kevlar helmets, look like startroopers teleported in amongst toothless Afghan elders.

Hi-tech gear is no panacea, though: Members of the platoon fall in some of the war’s bloodiest fighting.

Grasping for a lasting achievement justifying that sacrifice, Capt. Dan Kearney points to OP Restrepo, a firebase named after a fallen comrade, carved out amid hostile territory. (That base was abandoned in April.)

“We’re gonna try to bring progress here,” Kearney promises in a meeting with valley elders.

We’ll “flood this whole place with money.”

But when he doesn’t get cooperation, Kearney erupts: “You’re not understanding that I don’t f**king care!“

Counterinsurgency is a frustrating business, demanding that soldiers win native loyalties by serving as community organizers.

In Afghanistan today, “anti-corruption efforts are every bit as important as killing or capturing militants, if not more so,” the New York Times reports.

This sounds depressingly familiar.

Historian George C. Herring documented the yes-we-can spirit of LBJ-era nation-building in 1986′s America’s Longest War (alas, not our longest anymore).

While “IBM 1430 computers were programmed to predict enemy attacks,” teams “trained in propaganda and social services would go into the villages … to build popular support for the government and undermine the Viet Cong,” helping to “realiz[e] the dream of a Great Society in Asia, not just here at home,” as Vice President Hubert Humphrey put it.

In his inaugural address, President Obama assailed “those who question the scale of our ambitions.”

For “ambitious scale,” how’s bringing stable government to a fractured, warlord-plagued country with 72 percent illiteracy? If Republicans are on board, they should drop all pretense of skepticism toward grand government plans.

Next to this, stopping the oceans’ rise should be a snap.

Yet even those who should know better, like Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., insist that Steele “needs to apologize to all the men and women who’ve been fighting in Afghanistan.”

Those soldiers deserve an apology, all right — but not from Steele.

Killer Drones: Where’s the Accountability?

When the Obama administration officially declared that an American citizen — Anwar al-Awlaki, a radically influential global preacher of murderous jihad — is on a targeted list to be tracked and killed by CIA pilotless drones, New York Times reporter Scott Shane made a constitutional point that had no discernible impact on Congress or the citizenry at large:

“To eavesdrop on the terrorism suspect, intelligence agencies would have to get a court warrant. But designating him for death … required no judicial review.” (New York Times, May 13)

On June 24, the president’s closest adviser on counterterrorism, John Brennan — a former high-level CIA official who was deeply involved in techniques for interrogating terrorism suspects that ignored the U.S. Torture Act — indicated that more American citizens could become targets of CIA pilotless drones.

In an interview with Washington Times reporter, Eli Lake (June 24), Brennan referred to “dozens of Americans (who) have joined terrorist groups and are posing a threat to the United States.”

Said Brennan: “To me, terrorists should not be able to hide behind their passports and their citizenship, and that includes U.S. citizens, whether they are overseas or whether they are here in the United States.

What we need to do is to apply the appropriate tool and the appropriate response.“

Since these instantly decisive drones — unhindered by rules of evidence and pesky defense lawyers — are, as I’ve reported, Obama’s favorite weapon against terrorism, it is very likely that Anwar al-Awlaki will not be the lone American citizen to be obliterated by a Predator or Reaper drone. How many Americans will object?

After all, how many candidates of either party will even mention the drones in the midterm election campaigns? Even the Tea Party legions in their admirable classes on the constitution — while, at rallies and meetings, they hold the founding document in their pockets — have hardly shown concern about the effects of these pilotless drones on our Declaration of Independence’s mandate that we show “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind.”

In those countries — among them, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen — where civilians with no ties to terrorism mourn family members and friends inadvertently killed in the corollary damage of drone attacks — the United States is increasingly reviled and feared while terrorists feed on the natives’ anger to recruit more of them.

Consider the testimony of a Pakistani journalist, Safdar Darwar (General Secretary of the Tribal Union of Journalists), on May 12, a day after a U.S. drone strike killed 24 people in North Waziristan. His story — and that of a worker with the Waziristan Relief Agency that aids victims of drone attacks — is in “Drone and Democracy” by Kathy Kelly and Josh Brollier (commondreams.org, May 18).

The social worker, who did not want his name used, described a drone hit in that area a year ago that killed three people: “Their bodies, carbonized, were fully burned.

They could only be identified by their legs and hands. One body was still on fire when he reached there.

Then he learned that the charred and mutilated corpses were relatives of his who lived in his village, two men and a boy aged seven or eight.

They couldn’t pick up the charred parts in one piece.”

Fifteen minutes after that strike, the social worker continued, there was another, killing the brother of a man killed in the initial strike.

He went on: “People will wait several hours after an attack just to be sure,” before they come to help.

Then, the journalist, Safdar Darwar, asked some immediate questions — while, as I shall show next week, more and more drones are being built, including for American skies — challenging our journalists, and, in their sermons, our religious leaders as well as every candidate in the coming midterm elections:

“Who has given the license to kill and in what court? … What kind of democracy is America where people do not ask these questions?“

One man, whom I’ve grown to respect enormously, has been persistently asking questions aimed at the very core of our rule of law — questions ignored by our president, to whom the Constitution is an anachronism.

He is Philip Alston, the United Nations special representative on extrajudicial executions.

In a news story on Alston’s report to the U.N. Human Rights Council — he is independent of that slippery group — Charlie Savage of The New York Times was told by Alston that taking the lethal lead of the United States, dozens of countries (as robotic warfare becomes inviting) can carry out “competing drone attacks” on those they label as terrorists outside their borders.

Alston adds that while we the people here are passively complicit as our own country “asserts an ever-expanding entitlement for itself to target individuals across the globe — an ill-defined license to kill without accountability — (this) is not an entitlement which the United States or other states can have without doing grave damage to the rules designed to protect the right to life and prevent extrajudicial executions.”

Starting early in Barack Obama’s presidency, I wrote that he was becoming the most dangerous and destructive president in our history.

I was focusing on his multiple suspensions of the Constitution and what became his health care law that rigorously establishes health care rationing, especially for those of us too costly to the government to warrant our continuing to live.

But as he exults in extending and perfecting extrajudicial drone killings, Obama is now a global menace.

NATO Chief disavows 2014 drawdown date, insists war to continue indefinitely

New Speculative Date Already Being Shrugged Off in Favor of Promises of Eventual Victory

The replacement of the July 2011 drawdown date with a more speculative 2014 date is scarcely completed, and already that date too is being disavowed by NATO Secretary General and Afghan War enthusiast Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

According to Rasmussen, NATO troops will remain in the nation and will contiue their nearly nine year war “indefinitely,” pledging that the troops would only leave once it became impossible for the Taliban to take over in Afghanistan.

It is perhaps inevitable that those officials with dreams of some ill-defined “victory” in Afghanistan would bristle at any drawdown date at this point, as the repeated escalations of the war have not brought victory any closer and have instead only made matters worse, with record death tolls coming virtually every month.

Rasmussen, for his part, has predicted even more casualties in the months ahead, but claims that the large number of NATO troops being killed just proves how desperate the Taliban is getting. Armed with this assumption, he will no doubt continue to have such reasons for optimism as the war continues to worsen.

Liberazione o invasione?

Il senatore democratico Zell Miller, durante una convention repubblicana, mostrò il suo fastidio per il fatto che l’esercito americano di stanza in Iraq fosse definito invasore più che liberatore.

Sostenne con rabbia: “Le truppe nordamericane non sono mai di invasione, bensì sono truppe di liberazione”.

Questa è la sua opinione, una opinione che ricorre anche nell’America Obamiana di oggi.

Le forze americane che, in Iraq, nell’aprile del 2003 potevano essere considerate di liberazione sono, oggi, perlopiù viste come invasori.

Questo sentimento s’è concretizzato nel tempo, a tal punto che quando a metà del 2004 è stato chiesto agli iracheni quale valutazione dessero delle truppe americane, nel 71% dei casi la risposta è stata: “invasori”.

A luglio del 2004, il 75% degli intervistati la pensava nello stesso modo, essendo parzialmente o fortemente contrari alla presenza americana nel loro paese.

In Afghanistan non è da meno.

Storicamente, le forze americane sono state viste come liberatori, allorquando hanno cacciato eserciti stranieri da paesi occupati militarmente.

Nel 1944 in Francia, contro i nazisti, i soldati americani – che sacrificarono migliaia di vite – vennero osannati come liberatori.

Solo qualche mese dopo, insieme ad altri militari, liberarono il Belgio, l’Olanda e l’Italia.

Nel 1991, gli statunitensi liberarono il Kuwait, un paese governato da personaggi discutibili, ma pur sempre un paese sovrano, secondo il diritto internazionale.

E quando Saddam Hussein decise di invaderlo, considerandolo una provincia dell’Iraq, ben pochi ebbero da ridire dell’intervento militare americano.

E dopo aver espulso l’esercito di Saddam, i kuwaitiani ci accolsero come liberatori. Sfortunatamente, anche quando le intenzioni sono le più nobili, gli eserciti di liberazione si possono convertire in invasori se non riconsegnano immediatamente il potere nelle mani della popolazione locale.

Un esempio: quando gli Stati Uniti obbligarono le forze giapponesi a lasciare il Sud-Est dell’Asia, quell’atto di liberazione venne celebrato persino da Ho Chi Min.

Ma le forze del Sol Levante avevano a loro volta fatto sloggiare i francesi.

E quando i politici americani decisero di invitare nuovamente i francesi in quell’area, Ho Chi Min ed altri nazionalisti vietnamiti videro in quell’atto solo slealtà, e non grandezza, nel precedente atto di liberazione.

Di più, occasionalmente gli eserciti di liberazione americani si possono convertire non solo in agenti di invasione, ma in invasori veri e propri.

In vero, a differenza degli imperi del passato, la strategia nordamericana raramente inizia con tali obiettivi di guerra.

E se la nostra sicurezza dipendesse davvero dallo spiegamento di forze americane all’estero poco importerebbe ai cittadini degli Stati Uniti che le nostre forze vengano definite di invasione.

Però, raramente, la sicurezza interna dipende dalle forze dispiegate all’estero, ma è di solito indebolita da questo fatto.

Gli Stati Uniti hanno cacciato il decrepito impero spagnolo dalle Filippine, nel 1898, quando gli spagnoli non rappresentavano alcuna minaccia.

E anziché devolvere il potere ai filippini, gli americani decisero di rimanere in quel territorio, scaturendo una reazione delle popolazioni locali che durarono oltre dieci anni.

Un manipolo di americani morì per liberare i filippini dagli spagnoli.

Oltre 4000 morirono per consolidare la loro presenza in quel paese.

Senza contare che sul fronte opposto i morti furono oltre 200.000.

Insomma, il pericolo è che si possa incorrere negli stessi errori commessi un secolo fa.

E le lungaggini della guerra infinita in Oriente ne sono la riprova.

Nasce il primo Internet Provider pirata, evviva!

Altro che leggi sulle intercettazioni per garantire la privacy! Basta lasciare il mercato libero e, zac, ecco che arriva la soluzione.

Abbiamo già pubblicato della chiusura di oltre 70000 blog nella “democraticissima America di Obama”, ma sappiamo che Internet è una bestia nera per la casta, dato che risulta – ad oggi – assolutamente sfuggente, quasi incontrollabile.

Oggi, una nuova clamorosa iniziativa del partito pirata svedese: dare vita a un Internet Service Provider in grado di offrire il bene più prezioso: l’anonimato.

Il nome è emblematico: Pirate ISP.

Si tratta dell’ultima trovata del Pirate Party svedese, l’apertura di un fornitore di accesso a Internet a larga banda “pirata”.

In che senso? Quello che il gruppo svedese si appresta a lanciare, è un servizio di accesso al Web in grado di garantire il più totale anonimato ai suoi utenti, una sorta di isola felice nella rete per gli scaricatori indefessi.

Il servizio è partito in fase sperimentale nella città di Lund con l’obiettivo di raggiungere il 5% della quota di mercato della città prima di espandere il servizio anche in altre città del paese.

Partner di Pirate ISP è ViaEuropa, società che ha realizzato il servizio di “anonimizzazione” iPredator.

Pirate ISP rifiuterà il permesso agli organi governativi svedesi di monitorare il traffico del provider e promette di non fornire log di alcun tipo sulle attività dei propri utenti.
Non accetterà influenze da parte soprattutto degli Stati Uniti e i creatori promettono di avere in serbo diverse sorprese per tenere a bada il fronte anti-pirateria svedese.

Via il bavaglio ai giornali, ma resta il comma ammazza-blog

Hanno tolto il bavaglio ai giornali, ma non ai blog.

Infatti resta l’obbligo di rettifica entro 48 ore dalla richiesta per i siti Internet: la maggioranza ha infatti bocciato tutti gli emendamenti dell’opposizione che puntavano a sopprimere questa norma (comma numero 29 meglio noto come “ammazza-blog“) contenuta nel ddl intercettazioni.

“Con un lapidario provvedimento pressochè privo di motivazione, Giulia Bongiorno, Presidente della Commissione Giustizia della Camera (finiana) ha dichiarato inammissibili – tra gli altri – gli emendamenti presentati dall’On. Cassinelli e dall’On. Zaccaria al fine di cercare di limitare e contenere gli effetti nefasti che l’attuale comma 29 dell’art. 1 del c.d. DDL intercettazioni (rectius anti-intercettazioni) minaccia di produrre sulla libertà di informazione in Rete” scrive nel suo blog l’avvocato Guido Scorza esperto della Rete.

Il testo di legge licenziato al Senato estende a tutti i gestori di siti informatici “ivi compresi i giornali quotidiani e periodici diffusi per via telematica” l’obbligo di rettifica previsto dalla legge sulla stampa: 48 ore qualora non si provveda ad una rettifica richiesta si è soggetti ad una sanzione fino a 12 mila e 500 euro.

“Che si chiami La Stampa o piuttosto Pippoblog” spiega Scorza.

Una “sequela di obblighi burocratici che non esistono in nessun Paese libero” scrive Fabio Chiusi su L’Espresso: “In soldoni, qualsiasi blogger non rettifichi un post entro 48 ore dalla richiesta, rispettando inoltre stringenti criteri grafici, di posizionamento e visibilità, rischia“.

Basta essere in vacanza un paio di giorni o dare una rettifica nel modo sbagliato per ritrovarsi con diverse migliaia di euro da pagare.

Il solo pericolo che questo accada ha una funzione deterrente e diseducativa: “si insegna ai giovani la paura ad esprimersi, si disicentivano i ragazzi dall’aprire un blog” commenta Chiusi.
E per reperire il blogger a cui chiedere la rettifica, c’è il rischio che venga inserito l’obbligo di “registrare” la propria testata presso qualche autorità: “Dagli Stati Uniti all’Europa, ciascun blogger è penalmente e civilmente responsabile di quello che scrive (come del resto già oggi in Italia) ma non esistono lacci burocratici finalizzati a scoraggiare le conversazioni in rete“.

Tanto che persino nel Pdl c’è chi ha provato a porre rimedio: l’emendamento proposto dal deputato Roberto Cassinelli introduce una distinzione tra giornalismo amatoriale e professionale e lo sostengono Antonio Palmieri e alcuni finiani.

Ma mentre il disegno di legge Alfano è in procinto di essere approvato alla Camera per poi passare alla rilettura al Senato, con il testo ammazza-blog invariato, la proposta Cassinelli è sparita tra le proposte di legge non calendarizzate.

D’altra parte, è anche vero che al Senato il comma cosiddetto ammazza Rete “era stato modificato malamente” e, dunque, gli emendamenti proposti nel tentativo di riparare gli errori e le sviste dei Senatori, dichiarati inammissibili.

“Il rischio – ma ancora una volte occorrerebbe che un esperto di regolamenti parlamentari lo confermasse – è che ora i giochi per la Rete siano davvero fatti perché temo che un emendamento dichiarato inammissibile in Commissione non possa essere ripresentato neppure in aula” commenta Scorza.

“Se così fosse, non resta che ringraziare l’attenzione che in Parlamento continuano a dedicare alle questioni dell’informazione in Rete, senza comprendere – o facendo finta di non comprendere – che il futuro – credo e temo l’unico possibile – dell’informazione libera passa proprio per il web“.

Usa: 73.000 blog oscurati senza preavviso

Più di 70.000 blog chiusi da un giorno all’altro, senza spiegazioni.

Una decisione motivata dalla richiesta di non meglio precisate “forze dell’ordine”.

È successo pochi giorni fa al servizio Blogetry.com, una piattaforma basata su WordPress e ospitata dal provider americano BurstNet, ed è stato solo dopo la ridda di speculazioni sollevate in Rete ad opera di siti come Cnet e ReadWriteWeb, che si è giunti a fare un minimo di chiarezza sull’accaduto.

Manco a dirlo, c’è lo zampino di Al Qaeda; alcuni dei blog ospitati da Blogetry sarebbero stati infatti collegati all’organizzazione e avrebbero contenuto materiale nocivo, come una lista di cittadini americani da eliminare e le istruzioni per creare una bomba fatta in casa.

Secondo quanto riferito a Cnet da Joe Marr, responsabile per lo sviluppo tecnologico di BurstNet, sarebbe stata l’Fbi a segnalare al provider l’esistenza di questi contenuti sulla piattaforma di blog e avrebbe chiesto all’operatore, in base a un protocollo chiamato “Voluntary Emergency Disclosure of Information”, di avere dei dettagli sui soggetti coinvolti.

All’interno della richiesta, l’Fbi avrebbe fatto riferimento una clausola che consente ai provider di chiudere di loro iniziativa i siti coinvolti in situazioni che potrebbero mettere a rischio la vita di cittadini americani.

L’impiegato di BurstNet che ha ricevuto la mail, sempre secondo quanto riportato da Marr, si sarebbe dimostrato più realista del re, arrivando addirittura a oscurare il server, cosa che l’Fbi non avrebbe avuto il potere di imporre senza passare attraverso un regolare mandato.

Insomma, BurstNet avrebbe agito senza essere costretto a farlo, spinto anche dal fatto che pure in passato Blogetry si era distinta per violazioni delle condizioni d’utilizzo del servizio di hosting.

Da ulteriori indagini dei colleghi di Cnet, pare che il materiale contenuto nei blog e riconducibile ad Al Qaeda fosse in parte collegato al magazine online Inspire segnalato da più parti, negli ultimi tempi, come sito di reclutamento per aspiranti membri dell’organizzazione terroristica.

In tutto questo ginepraio, rimangono parecchi punti oscuri e vari aspetti che lasciano perplessi.

In primis, chi risarcisce i 69.999 ignari e innocenti utenti di Blogetry che hanno visto da un giorno all’altro i loro siti sparire dalla Rete? È giusto, per punirne uno, castigarne migliaia? E come definire il comportamento di BurstNet, che ha aspettato dieci giorni prima di rilasciare una – stringata – dichiarazione sull’accaduto?

A complicare ancor più le cose, c’è il fatto che una settimana dopo la chiusura di Blogetry, un altro servizio simile ma ospitato da un altro provider, la bacheca di annunci e messaggi Ipbfree.com. è stato bruscamente oscurato.

Anche qui da un giorno all’altro.

Anche qui senza spiegazioni.

Gli amministratori del sito hanno affermato di essere “obbligati per legge” al silenzio.

Google to enlist NSA to help it ward off cyberattacks

The world’s largest Internet search company and the world’s most powerful electronic surveillance organization are teaming up in the name of cybersecurity.

Under an agreement that is still being finalized, the National Security Agency would help Google analyze a major corporate espionage attack that the firm said originated in China and targeted its computer networks, according to cybersecurity experts familiar with the matter.

The objective is to better defend Google — and its users — from future attack.

Google and the NSA declined to comment on the partnership.

But sources with knowledge of the arrangement, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the alliance is being designed to allow the two organizations to share critical information without violating Google’s policies or laws that protect the privacy of Americans’ online communications.

The sources said the deal does not mean the NSA will be viewing users’ searches or e-mail accounts or that Google will be sharing proprietary data.

The partnership strikes at the core of one of the most sensitive issues for the government and private industry in the evolving world of cybersecurity: how to balance privacy and national security interests.

Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair called the Google attacks, which the company acknowledged in January, a “wake-up call.”

Cyberspace cannot be protected, he said, without a “collaborative effort that incorporates both the U.S. private sector and our international partners.”

But achieving collaboration is not easy, in part because private companies do not trust the government to keep their secrets and in part because of concerns that collaboration can lead to continuous government monitoring of private communications.

Privacy advocates, concerned about a repeat of the NSA’s warrantless interception of Americans’ phone calls and e-mails after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, say information-sharing must be limited and closely overseen.

“The critical question is: At what level will the American public be comfortable with Google sharing information with NSA?” said Ellen McCarthy, president of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance, an organization of current and former intelligence and national security officials that seeks ways to foster greater sharing of information between government and industry.

On Jan. 12, Google took the rare step of announcing publicly that its systems had been hacked in a series of intrusions beginning in December.

The intrusions, industry experts said, targeted Google source code — the programming language underlying Google applications — and extended to more than 30 other large tech, defense, energy, financial and media companies.

The Gmail accounts of human rights activists in Europe, China and the United States were also compromised.

So significant was the attack that Google threatened to shutter its business operation in China if the government did not agree to let the firm operate an uncensored search engine there.

That issue is still unresolved.

Google approached the NSA shortly after the attacks, sources said, but the deal is taking weeks to hammer out, reflecting the sensitivity of the partnership.

Any agreement would mark the first time that Google has entered a formal information-sharing relationship with the NSA, sources said.

In 2008, the firm stated that it had not cooperated with the NSA in its Terrorist Surveillance Program.

Sources familiar with the new initiative said the focus is not figuring out who was behind the recent cyberattacks — doing so is a nearly impossible task after the fact — but building a better defense of Google’s networks, or what its technicians call “information assurance.”

One senior defense official, while not confirming or denying any agreement the NSA might have with any firm, said: “If a company came to the table and asked for help, I would ask them . . . ‘What do you know about what transpired in your system? What deficiencies do you think they took advantage of? Tell me a little bit about what it was they did.’ “

Sources said the NSA is reaching out to other government agencies that play key roles in the U.S. effort to defend cyberspace and might be able to help in the Google investigation.

These agencies include the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

Over the past decade, other Silicon Valley companies have quietly turned to the NSA for guidance in protecting their networks.

“As a general matter,” NSA spokeswoman Judi Emmel said, “as part of its information-assurance mission, NSA works with a broad range of commercial partners and research associates to ensure the availability of secure tailored solutions for Department of Defense and national security systems customers.”

Despite such precedent, Matthew Aid, an expert on the NSA, said Google’s global reach makes it unique.

“When you rise to the level of Google . . . you’re looking at a company that has taken great pride in its independence,” said Aid, author of The Secret Sentry, a history of the NSA.

“I’m a little uncomfortable with Google cooperating this closely with the nation’s largest intelligence agency, even if it’s strictly for defensive purposes.”

The pact would be aimed at allowing the NSA help Google understand whether it is putting in place the right defenses by evaluating vulnerabilities in hardware and software and to calibrate how sophisticated the adversary is.

The agency’s expertise is based in part on its analysis of cyber-”signatures” that have been documented in previous attacks and can be used to block future intrusions.

The NSA would also be able to help the firm understand what methods are being used to penetrate its system, the sources said.

Google, for its part, may share information on the types of malicious code seen in the attacks — without disclosing proprietary data about what was taken, which would concern shareholders, sources said.

Gli Usa che vogliono spegnere internet

Ma quanto illiberale è Obama? Internet dà fastidio anche al governo americano a quanto pare e, col nome di “Kill Bill” è comparso un progetto di legge per staccare la spina alla Rete.

Una proposta legislativa – ricorda il Corrierecomunicazioni.it – che fa i conti con l’ossessione cyber-securitaria cresciuta negli ultimi mesi nell’amministrazione statunitense e che in buona sostanza conferisce al presidente l’autorità di adottare “misure di emergenza a breve termine” al fine di proteggere la rete Internet nazionale e le infrastrutture collegate da eventuali attacchi, virtuali e non.

Tra i poteri concessi anche quello di chiedere alle principali aziende del settore di staccare la spina, sospendendo le connessioni per un limite massimo di 120 giorni (oltre il quale è necessaria l’autorizzazione del Congresso).

A dover sottostare al provvedimento (e a una nuova agenzia creata ad hoc, il National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications) saranno dunque i fornitori di connettività, i motori di ricerca, ma anche case produttrici di software e hardware in base, pare di capire, alla discrezionalità del Dipartimento della Sicurezza nazionale.

Per “infrastruttura informativa“, si legge nella proposta di legge, s’intende infatti la cornice che supporta “l’elaborazione, la trasmissione, la ricezione o l’archiviazione di informazioni elettroniche, inclusi apparecchi elettronici programmabili, reti di comunicazioni e ogni hardware, software e dato associato“.

Una definizione tanto vaga quanto ampia che ha subito generato una levata di scudi non solo nella forte lobby hi-tech, ma anche tra le associazioni a difesa dei consumatori e delle libertà digitali.

Qualche protesta s’è già levata, ma l’idea di avviare un progetto per Internet “alla cinese” agli aguzzini governativi a stelle strisce pare piaccia molto.

La Rete, e questa ne è la conferma, è l’unico strumento libertario esistente, l’unico strumento che bypassa stupide leggi sull’editoria e la censura.

Con la Rete e grazie alla Rete nulla può essere nascosto, nemmeno in Iran riescono a far scomparire le repressioni contro l’onda verde che non accetta Ahmadinejad!

Che la terra delle libertà lanci un segnale del genere non è piacevole, a meno che non si tratti di un segnale della prossima legnata elettorale di mid-term, che toccherà subire al primo presidente nero degli USA.

Semina Ogm, Coldiretti getta la maschera

Dalla lettura odierna dei giornali finalmente si esce dall’ambiguità e dai sospetti.
La Coldiretti ha gettato la maschera!!!! Questa afferma che “…venuta a conoscenza di alcune indicazioni (pare anonime) la Coldiretti provinciale presenterà questa mattina in procura un esposto proprio sul nuovo sospetto campo di Vivaro…”.
Giunti a questo punto è lecito pensare che molto probabilmente le lettere anonime precedenti siano state confezionate dalla stessa Coldiretti, che ora ha preso coraggio e le presenta in prima persona.
In ogni caso questa vicenda dimostra come ormai la Coldiretti non abbia più idee: di fronte allo sfascio dell’agricoltura italiana, rincorre come una disperata la vicenda degli OGM nel tentativo di mettere a tacere coloro che non sono d’accordo con il loro modello parassitario di agricoltura.
Tutti sanno che la Coldiretti è stata l’associazione che negli ultimi sessant’anni ha determinato la politica agricola di questo paese e tutti noi vediamo davanti ai nostri occhi lo sfacelo totale dell’agricoltura.
La politica sindacale della Coldiretti si caratterizza ormai da azioni di chiaro stampo nazi-comunista.
Le sue azioni si caratterizzano per un pronunciato nazionalismo alimentare, schedature (loro la chiamano etichettatura) degli alimenti, conquista dei C.d.A. delle cooperative per portarle sotto la loro ala dominatrice; ha limitato la libertà d’impresa e compresso il diritto alla proprietà privata introducendo quote in tutti i settori e obbligando gli agricoltori a comprarle per poter lavorare.
Si fa promotrice di azioni persecutorie verso chi non è d’accordo con la loro linea politica.
Questa associazione vorrebbe mettere a tacere chi critica queste loro azioni fatte nel passato e non condivide le sue ricette per uscire dalla crisi.
Agricoltori Federati e il Movimento Libertario sono stanchi di subire i diktat di un’associazione che con le sue ricette passate ha portato gli agricoltori al quasi fallimento, oltre che avere derubato i contribuenti italiani.
Ormai le loro ricette per la soluzione dei problemi dell’agricoltura sono destituite di ogni credibilità.
E’ ora di dare una svolta e che gli imprenditori agricoli capiscano che la Coldiretti, con le sue iniziative, li porta dritti al fallimento.
Agricoltori Federati è un’associazione che interpreta questa voglia di cambiamento e che non ha nessuna intenzione di piegare la testa di fronte alla tracotanza della Coldiretti. Agricoltori Federati – col sostegno del Movimento Libertario – fa appello a tutti gli imprenditori agricoli affinché raccolgano questo guanto di sfida ed si iscrivono a questa nuova organizzazione sindacale che ha come oggetto sociale la tutela della proprietà privata e della libertà d’impresa.

Ogm, un mercato in espansione nonostante le resistenze europee!

Meraviglie tecno-alimentari, o bombe a orologeria agricole e sanitarie? Gli OGM affascinano e suscitano paure e dibattiti sin dal loro lancio agli inizi degli anni ’90.

Quando si modificano geneticamente le piante, in generale lo si fa per aggiungere caratteristiche quali la resistenza a un erbicida, o a un particolare insetto.

Oppure caratteristiche nutrizionali, o ancora qualità atte a favorire un determinato impiego industriale.

Sono già una trentina gli Organismi Geneticamente Modificati la cui vendita è autorizzata nel territorio dell’Unione europea: cotone, mais, colza, barbabietola, patata.

Solo due possono essere coltivati, in Europa: il mais MON810 della Monsanto, e la patata Amflora della BASF.

Il primo fatto per resistere a due parassiti, e destinato soprattutto all’alimentazione animale; la seconda, grazie all’accresciuto contenuto di amido, è destinata all’industria della carta.

Ed è in particolare contro questi che si dirigono le azioni di protesta e i timori di contaminazione irreversibile dell’agricoltura tradizionale, diffusi in molti Paesi.

Alcuni Stati ne proibiscono la coltivazione appellandosi alle clausole di salvaguardia, altri, come l’Italia, per decreto.

Solo sei paesi coltivano il MON810, e la Spagna è largamente in testa con 76.000 ettari coltivati a mais transgenico sui circa 95.000 totali europei.

La patata Amflora è agli inizi: è coltivata solo in piccole quantità in Repubblica Ceca, Germania e Svezia.

Naturalmente, la biotecnologia genera un volume d’affari colossale.

Oggi sono sei aziende a dominare il mercato mondiale: tre statunitensi, due tedesche e una svizzera.

Il mercato delle sementi OGM vale 10 miliardi e mezzo di dollari all’anno, e ha un potenziale enormemente superiore.

Già nel 2006 l’Unione europea subiva le bacchettate dell’Organizzazione Mondiale del Commercio, per le chiusure del proprio mercato.

Ora Bruxelles ammette interessi e punti di vista diversi, e questo dà ai paesi membri libertà di scelta, ma al contempo rischia di aprire la porta a un’infinità di ricorsi.

(AGI) – Washington, 16 lug. – La prevenzione contro la malaria potrebbe partire direttamente dalle zanzare.

I ricercatori dell’Universita’ dell’Arizona hanno messo a punto un insetto geneticamente modificato che e’ immune all’attacco del parassita che provoca la malattia.

La zanzara resistente, spiegano i ricercatori sulla rivista Plos Pathogens, e’ stata ottenuta potenziando un gene legato al sistema immunitario dell’insetto, che evita che questo contragga la malattia pungendo uomini o animali infetti.

“Non ci aspettavamo che funzionasse cosi’ bene – ha spiegato Michael Riehle, uno degli autori dello studio – invece abbiamo visto che c’e’ un completo blocco delle infezioni“.

Circa 250 milioni di persone all’anno si ammalano di malaria nel mondo.

Secondo i ricercatori il nuovo insetto Ogm potrebbe un giorno venire rilasciato in grandi quantita’ in natura, limitando quindi le possibilita’ di infezione.

Sugli Ogm e Coldiretti, la risposta di Facco e Fidenato!

È con molto stupore che apprendiamo dalla stampa quanto è successo nel campo sportivo di Fanna durante la manifestazione organizzata dalla Coltivatori Diretti.

A scanso di equivoci va precisato che nel campo di proprietà di Fidenato Giorgio a Fanna a tutt’oggi risulta seminato un mais iscritto nelle liste varietali della Comunità Europea e pertanto è un mais perfettamente legale.

In primo luogo rileviamo che i partecipanti non erano nel numero tanto sbandierato e, ad un’analisi delle fotografie, si capisce benissimo che vi hanno partecipato numerosi pensionati e molti funzionari della Coltivatori Diretti, segno evidente che la base della stessa Coltivatori su questa battaglia non sta seguendo i vertici. Inoltre il numero era intorno ai 300 e non 700.

E’ anche necessario sottolineare che:

1. in Italia vige la direttiva europea 18/2001/CE che permette a tutti gli effetti di coltivare gli OGM a chi lo ritiene opportuno. Questa direttiva è stata recepita nell’ordinamento nazionale dal D. Lvo 224 del 8/7/2003;
2. in Italia è vietato vietare la possibilità di seminare mais OGM (si ricordi la decisione dell’Alta Austria, bocciata dalla decisione della Commissione Europea n° 2003/653/CE del 2/9/2003) se non invocando la clausola di salvaguardia, la quale però deve essere sostenuta da specifici studi scientifici ai quali potrebbe essere eventualmente ricondotto un rischio per la salute umana, o altri beni o diritti fondamentali;
3. in Friuli FVG non esiste nessuna norma che regola la coesistenza tra coltivazioni tradizionali, biologiche e OGM, perché le varie legislature regionali che si sono succedute dal 2003 non vi hanno mai provveduto;
4. l’az. Agr. di Fidenato Giorgio è da tre anni che fa richiesta di poter seminare mais OGM sui suoi terreni, senza che chi era tenuto a dare l’autorizzazione si sia mai degnato di dare una risposta consona alla legge in vigore;
5. in Italia è perfettamente legittimo commercializzare mais OGM e il suo valore non è per niente inferiore al mais tradizionale;
6. il 19 gennaio 2010 è stata depositata in segreteria del Consiglio di Stato la Decisione n° 183/2010 del stesso che, a seguito dell’impugnativa di una decisione ritenuta contraria alla legge da parte di un collega agricoltore, “…. Ordina all’Amministrazione di concludere il procedimento autorizzatorio…. “;
7. pende, davanti alla Commissione Europea, procedura di infrazione verso l’Italia per la sua mancata applicazione del diritto comunitario in materia di autorizzazione alla semina del mais OGM;
8. pende davanti al T.A.R. del Lazio un’impugnativa del decreto Zaia che ha di nuovo vietato a un imprenditore agricolo di coltivare mais OGM;
9. pende davanti al Consiglio di Stato l’impugnazione del decreto Zaia per mancata esecuzione della Decisione del Consiglio di Stato n° 183/2010;
10. un sondaggio di Demoskopea di fine 2008-inizio 2009 ha dimostrato che gli agricoltori      iscritti alla Coldiretti nel Friuli Venezia Giulia vogliono seminare OGM nel 53% dei casi; mentre nel Veneto sono al 52%.

Rileviamo che nella manifestazione della Coldiretti non si è fatto assolutamente cenno a questi fatti oggettivi.

Anzi il Presidente della Provincia Alessandro Ciriani, tradendo il suo ruolo istituzionale, ha preso decisamente posizione a fianco della Coldiretti, chiedendo il ripristino della legalità.

Ma il Presidente Ciriani parla perché conosce le cose o parla per muovere la bocca e dare aria ai polmoni? Chi è che in questo caso che non rispetta le leggi?

La Coldiretti continua a dire che gli OGM non hanno mercato (si legga l’articolo tratto da Euronews postato sul sito del Movimento Libertario a tal proposito).

Ci chiediamo allora dove sta il problema se chi li coltiva, secondo loro, è destinato al fallimento?

Le contraddizioni della Coldiretti divengono poi eclatanti quando il dott. Masini plaude alla proposta della Commissione di nazionalizzare la questione OGM, lasciando mano libera ad ogni Stato membro di decidere se permettere sul suo territorio di coltivare o no gli OGM.

Si sa che dai politici-sindacalisti non ci si può aspettare molta coerenza, ma la Coldiretti da una parte condanna chi non rispetta il regolamento europeo sulle quote latte (in questo caso va bene la sovranità europea), ma invece sulla questione OGM va bene non rispettare la direttiva europea!!!

I promotori della manifestazionecontinuano a martellare l’opinione pubblica evocando il problema della contaminazione.

Essi cercano di descrivere il fenomeno naturale dell’impollinazione e del flusso genico evocando disastri ambientali.

Si ricorda ai lettori che il mais OGM è perfettamente legale ed attualmente commercializzato in Europa.

Il problema che certi disciplinari non prevedono quantità superiori ad una soglia di materiale OGM, deve essere risolto da coloro che si sono autonomamente dati quel regolamento e non può essere risolto da coloro che seminano e coltivano tranquillamente delle piante sulla loro proprietà.

A quell’agricoltore di Arba che paventa timori per la sua coltivazione, diciamo che lui non ha alcun problema, perché è molto lontano dalla proprietà di Fidenato e, ripetiamo, il mais OGM è legalmente commercializzato in Italia.

Nessuno dovrà trinciare il suo prodotto!!! In ogni caso chiediamo a lui se si è mai preoccupato di risarcire i suoi confinanti e la popolazione dei paesi dove coltiva i suoi appezzamenti, dalla contaminazione dovuta alla deriva degli insetticidi che lui ogni anno usa sui suoi terreni coltivati a mais tradizionale per combattere la piralide.

Forse qualcuno è ora che cominci a chiedere a lui il risarcimento dei danni che provoca!!!

La Coldiretti parlava che essa sta dalla parte del consumatore, il quale non vuole alimentarsi con prodotti OGM.

La Coldiretti tuttavia dovrebbe dire a loro che ogni anno i consumatori-contribuenti versano con le loro tasse circa 8 miliardi di euro all’anno di contributi nelle casse degli agricoltori italiani.

Se sapessero questa notizia pensiamo che i consumatori sarebbero meno contenti di essere difesi dalla Coldiretti.

Per finire una considerazione politica.

La Coldiretti sta perseguendo una politica sindacale che rasenta ideologie nazi-comuniste.

Alimenta azioni di nazionalismo alimentare organizzando sit-in di protesta ai confini per bloccare il mercato delle merci provenienti dall’estero perché le giudica di pessima qualità.

Vuole introdurre l’etichettatura obbligatoria degli alimenti, meglio definirla schedatura, per, dicono loro, informare i consumatori della provenienza degli stessi.

Ma perché, ci chiediamo, aspettare una legge o obbligare qualcuno a dire di che nazionalità è quando autonomamente potrebbero far partire una campagna commerciale con il logo 100% italiano o fatto con materie prime prodotte al 100% in Italia?

Gli Agricoltori Federati e il Movimento Libertario non la pensano come la Coldiretti.

Sono convinti in primo luogo che nell’agricoltura, non solo italiana, devono sparire tutti i contributi pubblici agli agricoltori, restituendo le tasse ai cittadini-consumatori.

Inoltre deve essere rispettata la proprietà privata e la libertà d’impresa.

Sono convinti che non esiste un solo modello di agricoltura come vorrebbero far passare la Coldiretti e tutti i suoi simpatizzanti e compagni di strada.

Quale sarà l’agricoltura del futuro lo deciderà il consumatore che è il vero arbitro del suo sviluppo.

All’imprenditore deve essere però lasciata la libertà di scelta per scoprire quali sono i desideri dello stesso.

Il pensare di imporre un modello di agricoltura come vorrebbe la Coldiretti o qualche politico, ci troverà sempre contrari!!!

Blitz Coldiretti clamoroso flop

Il blitz di Coldiretti a Fanna per protestare contro le colture biotech è stato un flop clamoroso e una conferma che sulle biotecnologie la base dell’associazione ha idee diverse da quelle espresse dalla dirigenza romana.

Un sondaggio Demoskopea presso i maiscoltori del Nord Est nel marzo 2009 aveva già evidenziato che in Veneto e in Friuli gli agricoltori aderenti a Coldiretti favorevoli a coltivare OGM erano rispettivamente il 53% e il 52% degli intervistati.

Una prova che le campagne di questi anni promosse dall’associazione contro le biotecnologie non hanno fatto presa sugli agricoltori.

Lo stesso sondaggio evidenziava che la produzione di mais biologico – usata strumentalmente per invocare lo stop agli OGM – rappresenta solo l’1% degli ettari in produzione in Veneto e il 3% in Friuli.

Un dato che non sorprende anche per l’oggettiva difficoltà di combattere il problema delle micotossine e ottenere un prodotto sano e sicuro per i consumatori.

“Dopo avere annunciato la presenza di mille agricoltori, dalle informazioni che abbiamo raccolto, a Fanna c’erano circa 300 persone per la maggior parte dirigenti locali e molti altri estranei al mondo agricolo, ha commentato Duilio Campagnolo, Presidente di Futuragra.

E come se non bastasse i politici, che a parole hanno sostenuto il blitz hanno poi disertato la manifestazione, come l’Assessore all’agricoltura in Veneto Franco Manzato “.

“La sola cosa che mi vede d’accordo con Manzato, ha aggiunto Campagnolo, è la proposta di etichettatura dei prodotti, così sarà chiaro una volta per tutte che le biotecnologie già sono parte integrante della nostra filiera del tipico.

Ci preoccupano invece, prosegue Campagnolo, gli appelli alle distruzioni dei campi, che ricordano quelle organizzate da Bové in Francia.

Il passo successivo quale sarà? Assaltare forse i McDonald’s dove l’ex Ministro Zaia ha promosso i panini McItaly?”

“Quello che emerge da queste iniziative è che non si vuole accettare l’innovazione nel mondo agricolo e dare finalmente un segno tangibile a livello ambientale, diminuendo notevolmente gli agrofarmaci, alimentare, dando risposte di qualità ai consumatori e premiando le eccellenze della filiera zootecnica italiana, ed economico, offrendo agli agricoltori la possibilità di aumentare il loro reddito grazie a produzioni maggiori a costi inferiori” ha concluso Campagnolo.
