July 31 marks the 97th birthday of Milton Friedman, who passed away in 2006.

Winner of the Nobel Prize for Economic Science, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Medal of Science, Friedman advanced the principles of individual choice by popularizing ideas like school vouchers and private retirement accounts.

Through essays, speeches, and books such as Capitalism and Freedom, and Free to Choose, Friedman championed the ideas of liberty.

Every other year, the Cato Institute presents the Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty to an individual who has made a significant contribution to advancing human freedom.
